Lupita Nyong’o recently took the world by storm in a series of captivating head wraps as she went around promoting her new movie ‘Queen of Katwe‘. We already know Lupita to be a trendsetter, and also one who’s not afraid to show off her African roots, so her head wrap look is simply one of her creative offshoots. It was however a bit of a surprise when Vogue Magazine revealed Lupita on their October Issue also rocking the head wrap look; we immediately thought Gele has gone global on us! And if you’re wondering what Gele is, that’s the Nigerian word for head wrap in Yoruba Language. History lesson over.
The star actress recently spoke to People Magazine about her head wraps saying “going with the theme of the movie, they are my crowns…” Queen of Katwe is a Ugandan set movie that tells the inspiring true story of a Ugandan girl who becomes a chess champion and gains international attention. Lupita plays Nakku Harriet, the mother of the girl. “It’s the quintessential African accessory,” Lupita also adds.
According to the actress, she and her team sourced for the head wrap fabrics from East Africa and African abric stores in New York, or from a designer she is wearing. This she uses to create the crowns for her head and also celebrate her latest movie, as Lupita puts it.
Lupita’s regal head wrap series is an inspiration for the season and fashionistas all around the world are already copying the look.
