The Senate on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to suspend the planned deployment of the Fifth Generation Network in Nigeria. The red chamber stated this after the deliberation on a motion by Senator Uche Ekwunife, drawing the attention of the senators to the status of the 5G network in the country.

Ekwunife said her motion was borne out of the need to assure Nigerians of their safety by asking the Federal Government to postpone the launch until a proper investigation was carried out.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, said the 5G network deployment remained a controversial issue. He said the experts should be allowed to handle it and deliberate on the merits and demerits of its deployment.

It’s Africa’s third-biggest producer but many traders smuggle exports for better prices elsewhere

Sudan plans to set up a market to trade gold that will set a standard price in line with global rates for the precious metal. Sudan is the third-biggest producer of gold in Africa behind South Africa and Ghana. In 2018 it produced an estimated 93 tonnes.

But for many years gold has been smuggled out of the country because better prices were available abroad. This is the latest step in the government’s efforts to regulate an industry which promises to be a major contributor to the economy.

The transitional government in Khartoum has been trying to overcome shortages of imported fuel and flour, with inflation running at 80%. There is an acute shortage of foreign currency and this week the US dollar rose to almost double the official rate of the Sudanese pound on the black market.

Venezuelan security forces arrested dozens of people, including two Americans, after a beach invasion allegedly aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro – a plot said to involve US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the Venezuela situation has nothing to do with the US government. Maduro held up a pair of blue US passports, reading off the names and birth dates on them in a nationwide broadcast on state television on Monday.

He showed images of the fishing boats the alleged attackers rode in, as well as, equipments such as walkie-talkies and night-vision glasses. He blamed the attacks on the Trump administration and neighbouring Colombia, both of which have denied involvement.

Barcelona players will be tested for COVID-19 at the club’s training ground on Wednesday before resuming individual work in the coming days. La Liga teams have been given permission to return to training this week following the easing of some restrictions by the government.

Barca says the league gave the go-ahead for testing after inspecting the facilities at their training ground. La Liga organizers are aiming for a June restart to the season.

Players from the top two divisions will train individually after an agreement with Spain’s sports and health authorities that guaranteed the safety of both players and staff.

Football in Spain was suspended indefinitely in March amid the coronavirus pandemic and all players must be tested before they can return to training facilities.
