Looking peng with your makeup on fleek all day is so fulfilling and keeps you matching your “baby girl” lifestyle. However, the flip side is that no one finds fun in taking off all that makeup at the end of the day — unless, of course, you’re among the special demographic that enjoys taking a night bath regularly.

There’s been a time (or more) when you’ve been so tired at the end of the day that a makeup-wiping session isn’t on your mind. At that point, an inner voice tells you: “heck, hit the sheets and take it off in the morning.” What this voice doesn’t tell you is that going to bed with makeup on is bad for your skin and it can also cause breakouts! Seriously, removing makeup before you go to bed is an integral part of skincare, especially if you’re particular about having healthy, glowing skin.

But what happens on those occasions when you forget to stock up on wipes only to get home to meet an empty wipe case? Or that time of the month when your hormones are extra and your skin gets irritated by everything, including wipes? For days when either of the before happens, we’ve got you covered like we always do.

Check out 7 makeup wipes substitutes that are great for your skin…

#1. Aloe Vera

We know that aloe vera is great for the skin and hair, and is also super moisturizing. But did you know that this plant is also a makeup remover? Well, now you do! If you don’t have an aloe plant in your home, you can use an over-the-counter aloe gel. However, note that aloe products are not regulated by the FDA.

If you’re planning on using aloe vera as a makeup remover, massage a small amount into the skin with your fingertips and rinse off with lukewarm water.

#2. Witch hazel

According to Health Line, the “anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of witch hazel works wonders for those with acne-prone skin.” Create your own witch hazel makeup remover by mixing a 50/50 solution of witch hazel and water. Then, apply the mixture to a cotton pad and apply it on your face and eyes using a circular motion.

#3. Cleanser

Most of the time, good ol’ face cleanser is still a great way to take off all that makeup after being caked up throughout the day. No matter how many wipes you use, your face is not totally clean — you still need a proper sink session. Opt for a cleanser that wouldn’t irritate your skin and also try to avoid plenty of rubbing.

Speaking of rubbing, this is not the time to put in some arm power. In order words, avoid excessive rubbing as your skin hates that. After washing properly, you can follow up with the rest of your daily skincare routine.

#4. Coconut oil

We’re sure you’re starting to wonder what this oil can’t do, we share the same sentiments. This awesome oil is not just cheap and readily available, it also doesn’t need any concoction and is a great alternative for makeup wipes. What’s more, you can use it alone and still get maximum satisfactory results. Just dab your face with a cotton pad containing coconut oil and let it sit pretty for a minute or two. This will allow the makeup to soften and help you resist the temptation of rubbing your face (especially the eye area).

The main principle here is; oil dissolves oil and if your makeup is oil-based, you know it cannot resist the charm of coconut oil. Watch the coconut oil slip it off before your very eyes. It’s best to apply before a bath.

#5. Milk

Cleopatra’s flawless skin didn’t just happen. The use of milk on the skin is one beauty secret that has been around for centuries and has proven to be amazing. So, while milk helps take the makeup off, it also nourishes your skin. How’s that for using one stone to kill two birds?

In addition, the fat and protein found in milk (whole milk) helps retain moisture. That means you not only get rid of your makeup but also have some serious moisture locked in. Apply milk on your face and then wipe off with a cotton pad for the best result.

#6. Vaseline (petroleum jelly)

Who would have thought that our dear old Vaseline would top a list like this? Forgive us for we have taken you for granted, using you for every and anything without giving you proper accolades.

Vaseline can take off even waterproof eye makeup. All you need do is apply Vaseline on your face and wait a while for the makeup to soften before using a cotton pad to wipe your face. For stubborn matte lipsticks and even full face makeup, apply the same process. If you’re not a fan of the greasy aftermath, use your facial cleanser to wipe off your face, and don’t forget to moisturize.

#7. Baking soda and honey

We all know that we cannot talk skincare without honey popping up and this is without exception. It’s good for every skin type because honey repairs your skin cells and rejuvenates your face to give you that youthful glow.

Put some honey on a cotton pad and sprinkle some baking soda on it then rub it gently on your face to wipe the makeup off while also exfoliating. It’s preferable to rinse off with lukewarm water because wiping off might remove the effect of the honey on your skin as well.

Bonus tips…

  • Flat cotton pads are better than cotton balls as they provide more surface area and coverage as you remove makeup from your skin. Also, cotton balls would normally leave behind a residue of fibers on your lashes and/or skin during usage; cotton pads don’t do this.
  • Steam: Many celebrities swear by the steam method as it helps unclog your pores, takes out accumulated impurities, and rejuvenates the skin from the inside. After using any of these methods stated above, you can occasionally use steam to finish off any stubborn leftover makeup that might be clinging to your face. Then, either wipe off with a face cloth or rinse off.
  • Allow these substitutes to do the work by avoiding too much rubbing. Instead let it sit tight on your face while you brush, listen to your favorite music, or walk around your house. This will prevent your eyes from being puffy by morning. Then by shower time, wash off and watch your skin glow.
