1. Aisha Ardo, abducted daughter of PDP chieftain released

Kidnappers have released Aisha Ardo, the daughter of a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Dr Umar Ardo. Aisha was released in Abuja around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday after spending about 30 hours with the kidnappers.

Her father, Umar, confirmed the release of her daughter in an interview with media representatives this morning. “She was released on Sunday night around 11:00 p.m. She is fine and she is with me now,” he said.

It was gathered that Aisha was taken to a forest close to Gwarinpa area of the nation’s capital, where she was kept until her release. After her release, she was said to have trekked to an eatery from where she got a telephone with which she called her father. Her father, who was a former presidential aide, drove to the eatery to pick his daughter up.

Aisha was abducted at 7:45 p.m outside a popular supermarket in Kwame Nkrumah Crescent, Abuja on Saturday.

Algerians will vote for a new president on 12 December to replace long-time leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned in April aged 82 after 20 years in power amid street protests.

Mr Bouteflika, who has been ill since suffering a stroke six years before, had already dropped plans to seek a fifth term but the demonstrations continued against towards him and those in his circle.

The election announcement was made by Abdelkader Bensalah, the interim leader who has been unable to quell continuing protests by those demanding the creation of fresh institutions before any elections. They say any vote under the current system would reinforce the status quo.

But army chief Gen Ahmed Gaid Salah, who is currently seen as the real power in the country, has been insisting that polls take place before the end of this year.

Presidential polls initially planned for 4 July was postponed because of lack of candidates, plunging the country into a constitutional crisis as the 90-day mandate for Mr Bensalah expired in early July.

3. Oil prices surge after the attack on Saudi oil facilities

Oil prices surged more than 15 per cent to their highest level in nearly four months after an attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities that knocked out more than 5 per cent of global oil supply. Brent crude futures jumped more than 19 per cent to a session high of $71.95 a barrel at the market’s open. The Bloomberg news agency said it was the biggest rise in prices on record.

State oil giant Saudi Aramco said the attack cut output by 5.7 million barrels per day, at a time when Aramco is trying to ready itself for what is expected to be the world’s largest share sale.

I think the market is going to be in quite a bit of wait-and-watch mode, and of course, there’s going to be a lot of nervousness, and I expect a lot of volatility in trading as well,Vandana Hari, founder and CEO of energy markets research firm Vanda Insights, told the media.

4. Felicity Huffman sentenced to 14 days in a college admissions case that raises questions of race and class

Actress Felicity Huffman was sentenced on Friday to 14 days in federal prison for her role in a college admissions conspiracy. In that conspiracy, 34 wealthy and mostly white parents of college-age children are alleged to have paid thousands, and in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to inflate their children’s credentials during the college application season. Huffman was the first parent to receive a judgment.

Judge Indira Talwani oversaw the sentencing in Boston, where an investigation by the US attorney for the District of Massachusetts accused some 50 people, including coaches, test administrators, and others, of falsifying college admissions credentials. Investigators said some of the accused changed answers on tests; others bribed athletic coaches to claim they had recruited students for sports they did not play.

Felicity Huffman was arrested in March of this year as part of the federal investigation into cheating during the college admissions process. She was charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud, and pleaded guilty on May 13 to paying $15,000 for a test proctor to correct her daughter’s incorrect answers on the SAT, thus greatly inflating her daughter’s scores.

Beyond having to serve a fortnight in prison, felicity Huffman must also pay a $30,000 fine and serve 250 hours of community service. She will commence her two-week prison sentence on October 25.

5. Callum Wilson scores twice as he led Bournemouth to victory over Everton

Eddie Howe said Bournemouth’s victory over Everton was a “huge moment in our season” as Callum Wilson scored twice at Vitality Stadium. Having lost their previous two league games, against Leicester and Manchester City, the Cherries kick-started their campaign with a thoroughly deserved first home league win, lifting them to eighth in the table.

Psychologically, it was hugely important to win that first home game which is why today was a huge moment in our season. We took our chances when the game was in the balance,” said Bournemouth manager Howe.

England forward Wilson nodded Bournemouth into the lead after Joshua King’s close-range miss. Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised with a towering header, his first league goal since March, before two goals in five second-half minutes sealed Everton’s fate.

Substitute Ryan Fraser made it 2-1 from a low free-kick which appeared to come off Fabian Delph on its way into the net before Wilson made it three goals in two games with a delicious lob past Jordan Pickford.
