2. Uganda has reportedly confirmed a nine-year-old girl has Ebola

Uganda’s health ministry has confirmed a new Ebola case in the western town of Kasese. A girl of nine who had travelled from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo was found to have a fever during screening for Ebola at the Mpondwe border crossing. A blood sample that was sent for testing confirmed on Thursday evening that she had Ebola.

Initial symptoms can include a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat. Subsequent stages can bring vomiting, diarrhea and – in some cases – both internal and external bleeding. The girl who was isolated and transferred to an Ebola treatment unit has been reported to be dead. Uganda has maintained largely successful screening centres along its border with DR Congo in an effort to keep out an outbreak that has killed close to 2,000 people in the last year.

In June, there were two Ebola cases in the country. A Ugandan man and his Congolese wife lost two sons after their return from a trip to DR Congo to see relatives.

3. Terrorist militias targeted as fractures with Saudi grow – UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said it carried out air raids against terrorist militias in southern Yemen as the UN-recognised government accused the UAE of killing and wounding hundreds of people in the attacks.

“Precise and direct air strikes were on Wednesday and Thursday targeted at the militias,” said the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement late on Thursday.

The armed groups planned to target the Saudi-led military coalition – of which the UAE is a key member – backing the Yemen government against the Houthi rebels who control northern Yemen, it said.

“The UAE acted in self-defence after attacks by “armed groups affiliated with terrorist organisations,” the ministry said.

“I definitely – I’m 36-years-old. I’ve had some life changes going on, and I feel more me than I ever, ever have. It’s a vulnerable place to be, but it’s also really empowering. I just feel really grounded and that the decisions I’ve been making have been for the best. So, that’s good.”
