1. Loan defaulters to lose deposits in other banks – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria and other lending institutions have agreed to seize the bank savings of customers that borrow money and refuse to pay back. They agreed that the deposits in the customers’ other banks’ accounts should be used to service the unpaid loans.

This was part of the resolution at the 345th Bankers Committee meeting which took place in Lagos on Monday. At the meeting, the bankers decided that bank borrowers would be made to sign an agreement that if there was a default, the bank would have a right to access the borrowers’ other accounts. The bankers also decided that vital information should be demanded from bank borrowers such as Bank Verification Number, Tax Identification Number among other documents.

During a press briefing after the meeting, some of the bankers who spoke said that this was necessary to boost lending in the small and medium enterprises’ sector. They also said it was necessary to assist the Deposit Money Banks to maintain a minimum Lending and Deposit Ratio of 60 per cent by September 30, 2019

2. Kenya joins ranks of oil-exporting countries

Kenya sent off its inaugural shipment of crude oil on Monday, becoming the first East African nation to join the ranks of petroleum-exporting countries.

Though Kenya is still years away from building the infrastructure necessary to unlock its full commercial oil-producing potential, Monday’s maiden shipment of more than 200,000 barrels revealed possible tensions over how the nation’s crude wealth should be divided.

In March, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Petroleum Act of 2019, which allocates 75% of state-designated oil profits to the central government, 20% to oil-producing counties, and 5% to local communities.

3. Brazil rejects G7 aid offer as Amazon fire rages

Brazil on Monday rejected aid from G7 countries to fight wildfires in the Amazon, with a top official telling French President Emmanuel Macron to take care of “his home and his colonies.”

Nearly 80,000 forest fires have broken out in Brazil since the beginning of the year — just over half of them in the massive Amazon basin that regulates part of Earth’s carbon cycle and climate. G7 countries made the $20 million aid offer to fight the blazes at the Biarritz summit hosted by Macron, who insisted they should be discussed as a top priority. “We appreciate (the offer), but maybe those resources are more relevant to reforest Europe,” Onyx Lorenzoni, chief of staff to President Jair Bolsonaro, said.

“Macron cannot even avoid a foreseeable fire in a church that is a world heritage site,” he added, referring to the fire in April that devastated the Notre-Dame cathedral. “What does he intend to teach our country?”

4. Kim Kardashian announces the new name of her shapewear line

Kim Kardashian has unveiled the new name of her shapewear line, after asking fans for their suggestions. The reality TV star and entrepreneur has announced that the brand, which she originally unveiled back in June, will be called ‘Skims Solutionwear.’ She had originally christened the label ‘Kimono,’ but the name prompted widespread backlash and accusations of cultural appropriation both in Japan, where it refers to traditional dress and worldwide.

The reaction led to Kim Kardashian announcing that she would rename the new shapewear venture. She opened up the discussion via Twitter, where she asked her 61 million followers for their thoughts on the term ‘solutionwear’ and sought brand name suggestions.

Taking to Instagram to share the news, Kardashian said: “My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me – I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name. After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to announce the launch of @SKIMS Solutionwear.”

5. Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-1 to reach the second round

Serena Williams made the perfect return to the US Open after last year’s controversial final by thrashing her long-time rival Maria Sharapova. Williams, 37, won 6-1 6-1 in a first-round meeting which ended up lasting just 59 minutes.

But the mood was rather different as she beat the 32-year-old Russian for the 19th time in a row. Eighth seed Williams, who is bidding for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title and a first since returning from giving birth two years ago, broke Sharapova’s serve five times as she eased into a second-round meeting with fellow American Catherine McNally.

When asked about the decision not to allow Portuguese umpire Carlos Ramos to officiate her matches in New York following their infamous row, Williams said: “I do not know who that is.”
