The popularity of the Ankara fabric isn’t just a “Nigerian Thing” as the whole of Africa, as well as many blacks in the diaspora, have somehow agreed that the time to champion our signature fabric is now and forever. And with every new look we spot on African style stars, we indirectly get the message that this is how they want us to wear the Ankara fabric.

It’s been quite fun to watch the evolution of the Ankara print, especially with its recent surge to taking centre stage in a number of western designer collections in 2019 – most notable, the Dior 2020 Cruise Collection.

New-age Nigerian and African designers are taking right off from where the old left off as they come through with contemporary cuts and designs that appeal to the new generation of Africans who are more globally minded.

Understanding that the Ankara print has taken permanent residency in modern culture and is among one of the things that unite this generation of young African women, celebrities and social media influencers are also in on the mission to take the Ankara print to greater heights. But who wouldn’t? The print is such a delight thanks to it being aesthetically pleasing and so versatile.

One important thing to note about the way the African print is presented is that even with the more contemporary designs, it doesn’t lose its “African essence,” rather the designs give you the flexibility to take your culture to more places.

Whether they are on a personal style mission or modelling for a brand, African style stars are showing a preference for simpler, classier cuts and a love for mixed prints; whether that be a combination of Ankara prints or a mix of Ankara and lace.

Here’s how your fave African style stars want you to wear Ankara this season…
