When it comes to music in Africa, Kenya’s Sauti Sol is up there with the best of the best. The boy band of four is made up of recently engaged Bien Aime Baraza, Willis Austin Chimano, Polycarp Otieno and Savara Mudigi. Together, they have pushed boundaries both musically and fashion-wise.
The multiple-award-winning band first gained prominence in 2006 when they participated in the Spotlight on Kenyan Music competition, hosted by the Alliance française in Nairobi. Even then, their style was notably edgy and eclectic compared with what was common at the time.
13 years later, they have established their presence all over Africa and to a great extent, globally with tours across Africa and Europe too. The band continues to make bold statements with their clothing choices, ensuring that their style is a form of self-expression and of course trendsetting.
In 2016, an exhibition dedicated to their bold style statements was featured as part of Fashion Cities Africa at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. This marked the first major exhibition in the UK dedicated to contemporary African fashion.
From serving sartorial elegance in contemporary suits to more avant-garde looks and frequently representing in African print, their style has been a source of contention in Kenya as some of their outfit choices have been debatable. This has only served their popularity as they continue to make bold statements with their looks.
