1. Nigerians, Buhari, other foreign leaders celebrate Democracy Day

Nigerians all over the country celebrated June 12 which was signed into law as Democracy Day as a mark of honour to MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, presidential election.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, House of Representatives speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and some other dignitaries attended the inaugural ceremony of Democracy Day which happened at Eagles Square in Abuja.

Foreign dignitaries at the event also included Presidents of Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Namibia, Niger, Congo, Liberia, Gambia and Guinea Bissau.

Giving an inaugural speech which was purposely omitted during his inauguration, President Buhari congratulated Nigerians on their longest period of unbroken democratic leadership.

The President also pledged to continue the fight against corruption, insecurity and economic development, adding that “we will enshrine a Nigeria that works for Nigerians and not just a few people” during his second tenure.

He also announced the change of the name of the National Stadium, Abuja, to MKO Abiola Stadium.

2. Sudan protesters call-off strike

Protest leaders in Sudan have agreed to end the general strike that brought Khartoum to a standstill this week. They also confirmed that they are willing to resume power-sharing talks with the ruling military council.

The announcement comes eight days after a notorious paramilitary group attacked demonstrators at the main protest site in central Khartoum, an attack which doctors said resulted in the death of at least 118 people.

Speaking to reporters in Khartoum, Ethiopian envoy Mahmoud Drir said the Transitional Military Council (TMC) had also agreed to release political prisoners as a goodwill gesture.

“The Freedom and Change alliance agreed to end the civil disobedience from today,” Mr Drir said. “Both sides have also agreed to resume talks soon,” he added.

The head of the Transitional Military Council has called for elections to be held within nine months but protesters want an immediate transition to full civilian rule.

3. US Senate House holds Barr in contempt

The United States House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a civil contempt resolution against Attorney General William Barr and other administration officials for failing to comply with congressional subpoenas. The reps voted 229-191 in support of the move.

The vote would now give House Committee Chair Jerry Nadler the green light to take future action to get the unredacted report of special counsel Robert Mueller.

With the vote, the House has now authorised all its committees to pursue and enforce civil contempt of Congress citations for Barr, former White House counsel Don McGahn, and any other official in the Trump administration if they continue with their refusal of lawmakers’ subpoenas.

The contempt vote is supposedly the mechanism that allows Democrats in Congress to pursue more legal action against the Trump administration.

4. Miley Cyrus apologises for racially insensitive comments

American singer and actress, Miley Cyrus, has tried to make amends for controversial comments she previously made about her experiences making hip-hop-influenced music.

After releasing her 2013 “Bangerz” album, featuring production from rap producer Mike Will Made It, Cyrus went on to criticize the genre in a 2017 interview, claiming rappers’ lyrics were too lewd and saying, “I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little.”

Cyrus has seemingly realized the bad optics of that statement, apologizing in the comment section of a YouTube video by user As Told By Kenya titled “Miley Cyrus Is My Problematic Fav…Sorry.” The video is largely complimentary while casting Cyrus’ hip hop comments as an unfortunate moment in her career.

“It wasn’t the right thing to say, it was bad, it was racially insensitive, it had racist undertones and it wasn’t OK, point blank, period,” the YouTuber Kenya Wilson said about the interview.

Several weeks after the video was posted on May 31, Cyrus left a comment from her official YouTube profile on Tuesday.

“Just watched your video,” she wrote. “Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak up. Being silent is not like me at all. I am aware of my platform and have always used it the best way I know how and to shine a light on injustice.

“I want to start with saying I am sorry. I own the fact that saying … “this pushed me out of the hip hop scene a little” was insensitive as it is a privilege to have the ability to dip in and out of ‘the scene.'” she wrote

“Simply said; I (expletive) up and I sincerely apologize. I’m committed to using my voice for healing, change, and standing up for what’s right. Miley”

5. Super Falcons give Nigeria Democracy Day gift

Nigeria’s Super Falcons put smiles on the faces of Nigerians as they won their second match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons defeated South Korea 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon to secure their first points of the tournament, going level on points with hosts France and Norway with three points albeit having played a game more.

The Koreans started the game the brighter of the sides but fell on the back foot when a mix up between Kim Doyeon and Kim Minjung ended with the ball at the back of the net.

Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala then doubled the lead for Nigeria with 15 minutes left on the clock, getting past Hwang and slotting the ball home.

A flurry of chances for Korea late in the game was not taken and the Nigerian goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was making her first appearance in the World Cup, was rock solid in goal.

The Falcons held on to secure the 3 points. And having kept the Koreans at bay, Chiamaka became the youngest ever goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a Women’s World Cup game.

Nigeria also became the first African side in Women’s World Cup history to win their second group game at the tournament while Oshoala became just the second Nigerian to score in two different Women’s World Cup tournaments (2015 & 2019) after Rita Nwadike (1995 & 1999).

And in case you missed it, Disney has released the trailer for the sequel of their 2013 hit animation Frozen. The trailer teases viewers with a journey undertaken by Anna and Kristoff, Olaf and co. in search of answers about Elsa’s magical powers. Frozen 2 hits theatres in the US by November 22.
