Believe it or not, the obsession with fuller and longer lashes didn’t start in recent years. The story has it that the obsession stems from the notion that lashes get shorter with age. So before we share our favourite beauty looks from last week which all came with popping lashes, let’s indulge you with some eyelash history.
Legend also has it that in ancient Rome, author Pliny the Elder helped make long lashes even more desirable when he claimed that they were linked to being pure. He’s quoted to have incorrectly stated that “eyelashes fell out from excessive sex and so it was especially important for women to keep their eyelashes long to prove their chastity.” This resulted in women going to great lengths to have the longest lashes possible.
In the 1800s, hundreds of years after Pliny made that false assertion, lashes became popular again. For instance, in 1899, there were accounts of women having lashes implanted into their eyelids using needles. The procedure even became popular in Paris and around this time, the faint-hearted would glue human hair to their eyelids instead of threading it. Of course, the method wasn’t too successful and the hair often fell off. Little did they know that in about 20 years, they’d get the lash innovation they really needed.
In 1911, a Canadian woman named Anna Taylor became the first to patent artificial lashes and in 1915, Karl Nessler, a popular New York hairdresser opened a hair salon where he sold false eyelashes and lash services.
False lashes have evolved over the years and the industry has grown so much, giving us options – from being produced out of crescent-shaped fabric with tiny hairs coming out of it to being assembled with thin and durable plastic, mink, silk and many more options.
