Here’s a rundown of 5 of the hottest news topics…

1. Nigerians trend #OccupyNigeria as they take to the streets

A coalition of civil society groups gathered together in what was meant as a peaceful protest against electoral abnormalities in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The group assembled at Unity Fountain in Abuja holding banners with the caption Occupy Nigeria. Members of the group also held placards bemoaning outright rigging and extreme violence in some states during the elections.

Through its spokesperson, the group demanded that voting must be conducted for the disenfranchised electorate in affected areas. He also suggested that INEC open its back end servers to stakeholders, in the spirit of transparency.

2. Interim President Juan Guaido returns to Venezuela

Juan Guaido returned to Venezuela on Monday, risking arrest for violating a travel ban in his quest to oust Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro.

President Maduro is facing international pressure to step down amid a mounting humanitarian crisis. He however, has remained defiant, denying that a humanitarian crisis exists. He also suggests that aid efforts to the state are part of a US plot to orchestrate a coup.

Guaido left Venezuela for Colombia in late February to bring in food and medical supplies across the border in defiance of Maduro’s wishes. A clash over the humanitarian aid quickly turned violent, with hundreds hurt. Ignoring a travel ban imposed on him by the country’s Supreme Court, he embarked on a South American tour garnering support from presidents. At least 50 countries oppose Maduro and are in support of the opposition leader.

3. Riverdale actor Luke Perry is dead

The Hollywood actor suffered a massive stroke on March 27 and had since been hospitalised. He died on March 4 at the age of 52.

Perry rose to fame playing Dylan Mckay on Beverly Hills 90210. He also recently starred as Fred Andrews on Riverdale.

According to a statement by his publicist, he died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, California surrounded by his family and other close friends.

4. Democrats move to impeach Trump

In the wake of Michael Cohen’s testimony, House Judiciary Chairman, Jerry Nadler announced that he was beginning a broad-scale investigation into Donald Trump’s business and political life. The move is perceived to be a purposeful attempt by congressional Democrats to build an impeachment case against the President.

Nadler however admitted to not having all the facts and evidence to carry out an impeachment. He stated that the President would be on public trial throughout the course of the investigation and hopes at the end there would be substantial evidence to ‘persuade’ the American public that an impeachment ought to happen.

5. Balotelli celebrates goal live on Instagram

Name a better duo than Balotelli and iconic celebrations – we’ll wait. Olympic Marseille winter signing, Mario Balotelli, once again was the centre of attraction as he’s used to being throughout his embattled career.

The Italian striker on Sunday put his Marseille side in front against Saint-Etienne with a brilliant overhead kick. He then collected his phone from a cameraman before filming his celebrations with team-mates and uploading it to his Instagram story. Marseille went on to win the match 2-0.

As shocking as the celebration may be, he isn’t the only player to take a selfie during a game. Former Roma and Italy striker Francesco Totti took a picture of himself celebrating after scoring against Lazio in the Rome derby in 2015.
