For the last day of Lagos Fashion Week 2018, Mai Atafo showcased ‘The Urban Jungle’ Collection as only Mai could. Complete with Godwin Strings on the violin and Oke Abiodun playing the drum, Mai definitely gave us a show! With this collection, the renowned designer collaborated with newcomer accessories brand – Kisara by Eki Ogunbor who provided the man bags – to create the perfect presentation.
The collection featured an edgy take on native wears with Nonso Bassey, the multi-talented actor, singer, songwriter and voice-over artiste, making his debut in the world of modelling by opening the show.
One-of-a-kind tunics, blazers, Mai’s signature suits, pleated trousers, and more atypical designs make up this collection in shades of grey, burnt orange and tans. Adding to the essence of the “warrior spirit” of the collection, models were seen crowned in military-inspired hats, berets and fez hats from South African brand, Simon and Mary.
The collection which was inspired by traditional African, safari and military attires was closed off by style influencer, LovefromJulez, who served as the co-creative director for the collection. Julez’s closing outfit was a fine fit for the “Modern African Woman,” who is a certified Style Raven!
According to Mai,
“The collection is an external expression of our mental state of mind when we hustle every day in Africa. A state of mind which means we are ready to take on the world either as traditional warriors, fearless individuals from the jungle or ready for war soldiers. The above is expressed in clean lines, master tailoring, sharp cuts over minimalistic designs with an obvious masculine vibe, which can be seen as soft and strong for the female and male pieces respectively.”
Here’s a look at the offerings of the collection…
