David Tlale is known for his extravagance and he recently proved yet again that he is the king of theatrics during New York Fashion week. For NYFW, David Tlale’s Runway was set in times square, on the streets of New York, so when it was time for his delivery at the just concluded African Fashion International Joburg Fashion Week, everyone was ready for whatever drama David had in store, or so they thought.
Unlike New York, this show was set at the Sky Rink Studios in downtown Joburg. Members of the media as well as VIP guests arrived to witness a unique fashion presentation and boy, did they get more than they bargained for.
Being in the industry for 16 years and counting means you have to keep reinventing your brand which explains why David always keeps his shows spectacular. The show was sponsored by MAC, Wella and Courvoisier Cognant.
For the show, the brand’s latest collection “Azania” was broken down into six sub-collections including the David by David Tlale line, the fantastic Blangola collection, a men’s underwear range, and an everyday wear line which had an array that featured fabrics with quotes from Nelson Mandela printed on them, among others.
The likes of Nigeria’s D’banj, Refilwe Modiselle, Lalla Hirayama, Savita Mbuli, Vusi Nova and Tumi Voster walked for the star designer as he showcased African renaissance on the runway.
Here’s a look at select pieces from the collection…
