ith runway shows, we often get so focused on the general setting of the show that we forget that those walking mannequins who help us gauge how the fabrics move against the wind or how they look on a particular skin tone are actually humans and that it takes a great model to do justice to that walk down the runway. Although this sounds easy on paper, it is a lot harder in reality, which is why those who actually get it done well are highly praised and remain booked; models like Naomi Campbell with the walk worth millions, Nigeria’s much beloved Mayowa Nicholas who is making major moves and putting Nigeria on the global fashion map, male models like Victor Ndigwe and the star of the moment Davidson Obennebo.
Davidson Obennebo is neither new to the spotlight nor is he particularly a rookie in the dynamic world of fashion. In 2016, he won the most prestigious modelling competition in the world, the Elite Model Look Competition, making a record as the first man of colour to win the elusive crown. The talents and potential the judges saw that made them deem him good enough to be crowned winner has most certainly not diminished as Davidson continues to make Nigeria and indeed all of Africa proud.
Davidson, much like fine wine, seems to get only better and better with time. 2018 seems to be his year; this current men’s fashion week season, he has been seen walking many A-class runway shows. He struts on the runway with a presence that draws and keeps attention to himself which explains why in just this short time he has walked for top fashion houses like Dolce & Gabbana, Les Hommes, Giorgio Armani, and many more; literally going from Milan to Paris to grace them all with his presence and live every model’s dream.
